Joint study on opportunities and challenges for gender inclusive environmental justice

Environmental justice cannot be achieved without the protection and fulfilment of human rights and gender
justice. Addressing gender inequality is necessary as it impedes the central tenants of environmental justice,
including fair allocation of environmental benefits and burdens (distributive justice); equal access to and
influence in environmental governance (representational justice); and transparent, informed, and inclusive
environmental decision-making processes (procedural justice). The impacts of environmental degradation
are shaped by gender inequalities, with women facing disproportionate harm without equal access to
resources to effectively cope (Boyer and Granat, 2021; Castañeda Carney et al., 2020; OHCHR, 2022; UN
Women, 2022). While women are mobilizing and leading efforts to address environmental degradation,
they are often left out of decision-making spaces to address environmental injustices and face barriers to
accessing justice (Strumskyte et al., 2022; Tran and Hanaček, 2023; Xie, 2023).
